Kaveri's Detective Story
THE BANGALORE DETECTIVES CLUB
- Harini Nagendra
The Bangalore Detectives Club caught my attention in a Melbourne library, and I was in awe. Evidently, I was eager to read a novel set in Bangalore and in a genre that I enjoy.
The references to Kaveri's interest in the investigative novels "Lady Molly of Scotland Yard" and "The Sign of the Four" by Arthur Conan Doyle(Creator of Sherlock Holmes) were particularly interesting. As well as the mentions of emerging technology that uses fingerprints to identify criminals. I was both surprised and delighted while reading about Kaveri swimming in Sari and riding a car.
Although I sensed that the plot was losing steam in between, it picked up again by the end. I was disappointed at times as the story often dragged and lacked the potential twists and turns that readers look for in typical detective novels. I even wondered if the police at the time were genuinely incapable of conducting a proper investigation. Occasionally the plot grew unrealistic to portray Kaveri's abilities and intelligence.
I liked the attempt of using native words and provide a "Kaveri's dictionary" explanation of their meaning. Also, sharing a few local dishes as "Kaveri's Adventures in the Kitchen" at the conclusion. In a way, introducing the nativity to a bigger audience was a pretty nice attempt.
A genuine effort from Harini on her debut novel.
